Best bets for Sunday, May 15

Rossman should be primed to run well fresh

Bendigo plays to host an eight-race card on Sunday and we’ve run the rule over the fields to find some appealing betting prospects.

The track is rated a Heavy 8 on raceday morning with the rail in the true position.

BEST BETRace 3 No. 12 – Psycho StarThe Salanitri-trained daughter of Star Turn is quite well bred and has shown enough in her career to date. The key for me is the ideal draw and the engagement of John Allen – a rare booking for this stable. I expect Allen to camp just off the speed, possibly in the one-one, and I can’t see the conditions or the extra 100m being a problem. She should get her chance to break through here.

Race 8 No. 3 – Red Red Wine

Thought there was a fair bit of merit to the return run from this Shea Eden gelding, especially under a big weight. The form out of that race is looking good too, with 4th and 5th having since run narrow seconds and the 6th and 7th horses – Deep Blast and Puckapunyal – both winning at their next outings. Importantly the Bel Esprit 4YO has form on a Heavy 10 and is a winner at his only other second-up run. The only slight knock is the 1300m second-up but he’ll be fitter for the first-up assignment and should go very close.

BEST VALUE

Race 5 No. 8 – Rossman

This is an open race with a handful of decent winning chances but I’m with the resuming Rossman at $9. He races well fresh and is more than capable on rain-affected tracks. Brideoake gave him one really solid jumpout a month or so ago and then another quieter one more recently, and I think he’ll have him ready to go first-up. There’s plenty of speed on paper too and he maps well from a good gate.

QUADDIE

It’s quite a tricky quaddie so we’ll take a sliver of a wide one for insurance and then go harder at a skinny approach.
